U.N SYRIA ENVOY BEMOANS LACK OF AID DELIVERIES, SEEKS ALEPPO TRUCE

United Nations special envoy on Syria de Mistura speaks during a news conference in Vienna

(Reuters)The U.N. special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said on Thursday that no aid convoys had reached besieged areas of Syria for the past month, and that he had suspended a humanitarian task force until next week as a signal to major powers.

De Mistura said a 48-hour pause in fighting in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo would be the main topic of a meeting later on Thursday of a group of countries working for a cessation of hostilities.

“I insist, on behalf of the (U.N.) Secretary General: to have a 48-hour pause in Aleppo, to start with, would require some heavy lifting not only by the two co-chairs (Russia and the United States) but also those who have influence on the ground,” de Mistura told reporters in Geneva.
